Proton VPN

Overview and practical trade-offs

Proton VPN creates a VPN connection between a device and a server operated by the service. It can be useful when you want an additional layer around network traffic, particularly on connections you do not administer. The mobile interface focuses on connection status and server choices, with capabilities depending on the selected plan.

Check that the connection is active before relying on it, and review reconnect behavior when switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data. A VPN changes part of the network path; websites can still identify a signed-in account, and it does not remove phishing risks or unsafe downloads. Performance also depends on the connection and server route.

The app suits users who understand that distinction and want a dedicated VPN rather than a bundle of unrelated utilities. Compare available locations and features before subscribing. Workplace networks, streaming services and other providers may have their own rules and limitations for VPN connections.

Limitations to consider
