Libby

Overview and practical trade-offs

Libby connects readers to the digital collection offered by their library through OverDrive. With an eligible library card, you can browse, borrow and read or listen within the app. Downloads support offline use, and reading controls help adjust the experience to a phone or tablet.

Start by adding the correct library and checking its card requirements. The titles you see and the number you can borrow are determined by that library's collection and lending rules. Popular books may have waiting lists, so place holds before a trip rather than assuming a title will be available immediately.

Libby is especially useful for readers who already use a public library and want another route into its collection. It is not an unlimited subscription to every book. Loans have expiry dates, and some delivery options depend on the country and library. Download borrowed material while connected before planning to read offline.

Where it can help

• Uses an existing library relationship for digital reading and listening.
• Built-in reading controls and downloads support flexible access.

Limitations to consider

• Availability, holds and loan limits depend on the participating library.
• A loan expires and does not become a permanent purchase.
